sleeperz hotel newcastle
By Anne Slater-Brooks. Anne lives and works in Sheffield. Her passion for travel was ignited as a teenager listening to her father recounting stories of his time in a kibbutz. Stints abroad in Belgium and France nurtured her passion, and she has since travelled to over 70 countries on six continents. She spends every spare moment travelling, thinking of travel, writing about travel or planning travel! Sleeperz is the new kid on the block of Newcastle hotels having opened its doors in 2010.
The hotel chain uses disused land around train stations, to provide quirky hotel accommodation in city centre locations, at great prices. This makes them ideal for those using public transport. After all, who wants to drag their bags miles after arriving in a new City?
The location is hard to beat. The hotel lies in the shadows of the train station, so close it feels like it is built into the walls. It is located on a quieter street, yet just minutes from the heart of the action. The bars and restaurants of Central Station, and the Quayside, are on your doorstep, as is city centre shopping

First impressions are good. Reception is modern, fun and funky. It’s bordered by a fabulous relaxation area to the left, ideal for chilling with a good book, whilst enjoying a coffee or snack from reception.
A feature wall, showcasing stacks of books, provides an unusual backdrop but adds to the fun theming abundant throughout. Red is the colour du jour, from the motifs on the lift, to staff uniforms and even the bread bin! It all combines to create a youthful ambience that is fresh and fun.
To the right of reception is the bar and restaurant. Prices are refreshingly down to earth, with a large glass of wine, a pint of beer and packet of crisps, coming in at just over a tenner. A steak sets you back a mere £12.95, with burgers, chicken and other typical northern grub costing less than £10 per meal.

Breakfast costs £7.95 and includes a selection of pastries, cereals and breads, along with a limited selection of hot food. Thankfully a coffee machine, dispensing a good selection of coffees is on hand, for those who may have over-indulged the night before!
The hotel has 98 bedrooms over five floors, with views overlooking the train station and River Tyne, or city centre. I strongly recommend booking one of the five Superior rooms, which have fabulous views of both the river and the city. I felt spoiled for choice, as I admired the panorama of the Tyne Bridge, castle and city rooftops, from the huge window of our fourth floor bedroom.
The red and yellow stripy headboard provides an energizing feel to the room, whilst the window seating area is ideal for those wishing to read, work or gaze out over the city. Complimentary Wi-Fi is of course included, and there is a separate TV area with additional seating.

It's hard not to admire the clever, space saving design of these rooms with foldaway luggage holders, under bed safes, and bijou bathrooms. The bathroom may be compact, but it's sleek and modern with shiny, white tiles, a powerful shower, quality towelling, and complimentary toiletries in dispensers.
Admittedly the bathroom is a little impractical, with a glazed sliding door and no way to prevent shower water escaping onto the floor. It's essential to put a towel down, before stepping back into the laminated bedroom, or you may find yourself sprawled on the floor in an ungainly manner!
The king size double bed is a little on the firm size, but is adorned with a good selection of pillows and quality cotton bedding, making for a reasonable night. However, whilst Sleeperz is in a quieter location, the shrieks of inebriated girls late at night may warrant packing a set of earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
Rooms are very reasonably priced with Sleeper Saver Rates in September starting at £67.50. Our Superior room was priced at £120, an absolute bargain for the location, complimentary hot and cold breakfast, and supersize room.
Our time in the hotel was limited to a few hours pre dinner, a late night drink and sleeping so the lack of additional facilities, such as a gym or spa wasn't an issue. For a city break, this hotel is perfect. Its youthful, colourful vibe, and location, appeals to people of all ages.
For value for money, and cool style it is a winner!
