Linthwaite House is a grand hotel that overlooks the UK’s largest lake, Windermere, in the North West of England. I had the pleasure of visiting recently and on arrival was initially astounded by its beauty – both of the house itseld and also its boastful mountain and lake vistas.
Just five minutes' drive from the bustling town of Bowness, the country house is perched on a hillside, amidst 14 acres of established gardens, its own small lake and private woodland.
The hotel is a sprawling Edwardian building of whitewashed render and black-and-white timbered gables. On entering, an air of calm descends – staff glide around the different spaces, which are a pleasing palate of pale greys, milky-whites, tans and bottle-greens. Splashes of leopard print or tribal pattern also add pleasing surprises to the guest’s eye.
The interior design, by Beverley Boswell wanted to create the feel of a well-curated gallery – the hotel’s modern artworks are displayed with professional precision. Rooms are huge and ours had two large windows overlooking the gardens, a sumptuous super king bed, lounge area to relax in with sofa and a luxurious bathroom suite, complete with the fluffiest towels and robes.

The Lake District is celebrated for its water, woodland and mounts. It famously was home to the revered author Beatrix Potter, who obtained inspiration for all her characters in this most dramatic setting – including Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddleduck and of course, Peter Rabbit.
The scenery of this national park – shimmering stillness of lakes against mountainous backdrops, is both picturesque and awe-inspiring in its natural grandeur and scale. And naturally, the draw of Potter’s innocent tales does also bring coachloads of foreign tourists to the lakes. But not all tourists have the inside knowledge of a magical place to stay, such as Linthwaite House.
To reach the Lake District, find flights to Manchester or flights to Glasgow. Alternatively find flights to Carlisle Lake District Airport, from Dublin, Belfast and London Southend.
